Hunting for Kamchatka brown bear is carried out during daylight hours from the approach, sneak, from ambush on spawning grounds, on tundra berry fields, on mountain ash, in thickets of cedar shrubbery and on crossings.
Bear hunting on spawning grounds.
Until about mid-September, bears visit spawning grounds and feed on fish not only at night but also during the day. From mid-September onwards it is mainly at dusk and at night. The bear becomes more cautious. On spawning grounds they hunt from approach - the hunter moves along the river, using bear trails and from ambush - waiting for the beast in a place where its appearance is more likely. When hunting it is necessary to take into account the wind direction and it is very important not to shoot while on a bear trail, of which there may be many. Bears frightened by a shot may “take off” along the path you are standing on. Individual bears (almost always adult males) stay in the upper reaches of small rivers and near unfrozen streams until the end of December. Here, in spite of the frost, they feed on salmon, which spawn until the end of the year, making tracks in the snow. Hunters, having made sure that salmon have entered the river and there are fresh tracks along the banks, sometimes set up bear hunts right on the roof of hunting huts and beams located near the river.
Bear hunting on tundra berry fields.
By the beginning of the hunting season in Kamchatka, berries are ripe on the tundra and bears graze on them during the day. This hunt is very profitable as bears get so fond of eating berries that they lose their caution. The main condition is to sneak into the wind. If the bear turns around and looks in your direction, it is enough to sit down and stay still. Perhaps the bear will try to smell your scent. But the wind from the bear in your direction will do its job. After a while, if you have not given yourself away by moving, the bear will continue to eat the berry quietly. You can get close to such a bear. Bears graze on tundra berries until the snow falls and the snow-free areas of the berry tundra disappear.
Hunting on rowanberries.
Knowing the location of rowanberries, hunters move into the wind, carefully inspecting the berry patches. Having detected the presence of a bear, the hunters, being especially careful, approach the place where the beast is detected as far as possible and wait for the bear, moving from one rowan bush to another bush, to expose itself to a shot.
Bear hunting in cedar shrub thickets.
Bears grazing in cedar shrub thickets have a peculiarity to periodically, approximately every twenty to twenty-five minutes, rise on their hind legs, looking around and smelling. This is a chance for hunters to notice the animal in a low cedar stand and possibly make an aiming shot. In tall cedar, a bear's presence will be given away by the moving tops of the cedar. Nevertheless, a bear eating a cone is cautious and alert. Here you should not hope for easy luck. Viewable slopes covered with cedar with glades are convenient places for such hunting. Having crept up to a bear eating a cone from the leeward side, hunters wait for the bear to come to a clearing or a path. And if the slope is steep enough and the bear is clearly visible, it is possible to shoot it right in the thickets of stenak.
Bear hunting on crossings.
Hunters make a route through places with a good view, having reached them they examine the surroundings with binoculars for a long time waiting for the bear to come out, and in case of its detection, depending on the current situation, take measures for extraction. This hunting is alternated with long rests during the inspection of the surroundings. In such hunting, bears are mainly hunted between 15 and 19 hours. Therefore, gamekeepers try to convince the trophy hunter to go hunting in the afternoon.
Fishing is by spinning and fly fishing. The objects of fishing are six species of wild salmon. Often fishing is combined with bear hunting.
